When a person witnesses endless tragedy and lacks emotional support, they can become numb as a protective mechanism. Constant exposure to suffering, pain, or trauma can overwhelm their emotional capacity, leading the mind to shut down feelings to avoid being overwhelmed. This emotional numbness serves as a way to cope with the continual stress, allowing them to function despite ongoing distress.

Without support, validation, or a safe space to process these experiences, feelings of helplessness and despair can build up, causing the person to disconnect emotionally as a form of self-preservation. Over time, this numbness might become a barrier to feeling empathy or joy, as the brain subconsciously shields itself from further pain. While it can be a temporary relief, prolonged numbness can also lead to feelings of isolation, depression, or emotional exhaustion, making it important for individuals in such situations to seek support and healing when possible.
