Survival is fundamentally a base instinct shared by all living creatures, including humans, as it is deeply embedded in our biological makeup to preserve life and ensure the continuation of our species. This instinct drives behaviors that help us avoid danger, seek safety, and protect ourselves from harm. Because of this innate drive, it is entirely natural and understandable for people to fear death or situations that threaten their well-being, such as torture, which can be perceived as even worse than death due to the intense suffering involved. Such fears are rooted in our primal desire to preserve life and avoid pain, and they do not indicate weakness or irrationality but rather reflect the fundamental survival mechanisms that have evolved to keep us alive.
