People living in occupied nations surrounded by sadistic military and gestapo often do not resist for several deeply rooted reasons. Fear is a powerful and immediate influence; the threat of brutal punishment, torture, or death can suppress even the strongest impulses to rebel. In such environments, the risk of retaliation against oneself or loved ones creates a chilling effect that makes resistance seem too dangerous or futile. Additionally, the oppressive regimes often employ propaganda, misinformation, and psychological warfare to undermine morale and foster a sense of helplessness or despair, convincing people that resistance is hopeless or that collaboration is the only way to survive. The constant presence of violence and intimidation can erode trust in any alternative, leading many to prioritize their own safety and the safety of their families over defiance. Under such extreme circumstances, survival instincts and fear often override the desire for resistance, making it a difficult and complex choice faced by those under brutal occupation.
